The Mindset You Need to Survive as a New Freelancer

freelance mindset Mar 23, 2024

When you're just starting as a freelancer, it can be really scary. Trust me, we all start somewhere, and for me it was at the end of my kitchen table. But if you want to be successful, you need to have the right mindset from the very beginning.

First of all, you need to understand that you're doing something new and unknown.

It's okay to feel unsure about things like where to find clients, what to offer, or how to get paid.

But here's the thing: you can't skip over the uncomfortable parts. I know it's not fun to feel scared or unprepared, but that's just part of the journey.

When I first started, I had to work early in the morning, during nap times, and after my kids went to bed. It wasn't easy, but I did it because I knew over time it would start to pay off.

You might have to do things that make you uncomfortable, like having your first discovery call with a stranger or sending out a proposal that's not perfect. You might even have to tell your partner or spouse that you didn't get any clients this week. That's okay! It's all part of the process.

The truth is, fear and discomfort can either drive you or stop you. It's up to you to decide which one it's going to be. If you're not willing to step out of your comfort zone, then maybe freelancing isn't for you. Just be honest with yourself.

But if you are willing to be brave and do the scary things, then I promise it will be worth it. You have to get started somewhere, and it's not going to be perfect. I'm about to start building a tech platform for copywriters and I have no idea what I'm doing! But I'm doing it anyway, because I know that's how I'm going to grow.

So, if you're feeling scared, uncomfortable, or unprepared, here's what I want you to do:

  • Take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's normal to feel this way.
  • Write down one small step you can take today to move forward, even if it's scary.
  • Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it might seem.
  • Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your dreams.
  • Keep going, even when it's hard. That's how you'll get to the other side.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey. Every successful freelancer has been where you are now. They've all felt scared and unprepared at times. But they kept going, and that's what I want you to do too.

So, are you ready to be a brave, thriving freelancer? Are you willing to step into the unknown and do the uncomfortable things? If so, then I'm here to cheer you on every step of the way.
